What is the Human Habitat?
Human Habitat is a Copenhagen-based Urban Design Studio which is behind the exciting "The Impact Farm" project.
TITAN Containers have contributed a 20 foot Side Door Container - also called full side access container – to the project, which has been adapted to design a portable Pop Up City agriculture unit with particular emphasis on utilizing large unused urban land for resource-efficient production of unsprayed vegetables and fruit.
A modern city garden
The Impact Farm serves as a modern urban garden and is a pilot project that will be a foretaste as to what future food production will look like. A Pop-Up farm has been installed as part of the regeneration of inner Nørrebro and is happening in conjunction with the launch of the Nordic Architecture Nordic Built Cities Challenge. The crops grown in the Pop-Up farm will be distributed to local cafes, restaurants, food communities and food courts.
With a desire to improve and reconcile food production and modern architecture, Human Habitat wants to combine the latest innovative technologies and methods in food production with modern architecture and smart design. The objective is to create a device that will ensure resource-efficient local food production and beautify the urban environment.
About the concept
The concept is to simply give a used shipping container new life and use it to transport and subsequently become a central part of the structure. The real beauty of the concept is that all components used in the construction will be able to be stored and transported in the container. It is made up of an assembly of prefabricated components which when constructed form a two-story vertical urban agriculture unit.
When the container is "packed out" and the structure is in place and installed, the production area is 50 square meters. By using simple construction methods it can be assembled within 7-10 days and is equally as easy to disassemble and move to another location. It is designed for impermanence to best utilize the unused urban areas. It also ensures the construction method has a high degree of flexibility and scalability potential.
Human Habitat also writes the following about the project:
"The basis of our design is C2C and the circular economy, we seek to use only materials that are either recycled or produced for recycling. The unit is self-sufficient and uses clean energy from the sun, wind and water (through rainwater harvesting).
It is also our intention to exploit the power of architecture to create a space, which in addition to ensuring high and stable yields of nutritious vegetables, also supports social interaction and strengthens the cohesion of the community. Food can create connections between people, the aim of the project is to give nature and plants a place in the dense urban space, whilst creating bonds between people. The device is designed to create a financially sustainable business model that can ensure resource-efficient local food production, create green jobs and enhance local economic activity. For us it symbolizes Pop Up urban regeneration where aesthetics, sustainability and productivity go hand in hand. "
Another container needed for the project
The pilot project is already a success and TITAN are in the process of adapting another "The Impact Farm" container which should be ready by April 1st. This container will then be sent all the way to New York.
