When we were asked how our extra-tall high cube containers could be used as building blocks for a touring Disney castle, our engineers had plenty of ideas.

The challenge

Balich Wonder Studio, a Milan-based creator of live events and spectacles, had been contacted by Disney to create a fairytale castle that would tour the world. Balich knew of TITAN’s experience in both the shipping container and events spaces and asked us if we could help.

Their goal, they explained, was to create a portable castle that would use shipping containers in two ways: to transport the castle from country to country and as the building blocks for the structure itself.

The solution

What a brief! We reviewed Balich’s plans and determined that 16 40-ft high-cube containers would be ideal as the framework for their stunning fairytale creation.

Even our brand-new containers aren’t exactly fit for a princess, but with some clever planning, we were able to ensure that they would never be seen. Paying guests would turn up, see the completed structure – and be blissfully unaware of the industrial shipping containers on which it was built.

Fitting the exterior into the shipping containers was no problem. High cubes are a towering 2.69m inside, so there’s plenty of headroom.

The delivery

Two of the containers delivered were standard TITAN high cube stock, but a colossal 14 additional ones had to be modified by our expert engineering team in Bristol, England. Over the course of several weeks, our engineers carried out structural reinforcement work to strengthen the tops of each container. Their mission also included extensive modifications to the containers’ exteriors to ensure the facade of the Disney castle could be securely secured.

Once this was done, all 16 containers were taken to Greenwich in London to be transformed into the jaw-dropping Disney attraction that would tour the world. When Balich had completed their fine-tuning and signed off on the project, everything was loaded onto a boat bound for the Middle East.

The results

The pictures, we think, speak for themselves. They perfectly illustrate just how versatile containers can be – and also hint at the kind of projects that our engineers can help bring to life. Events and spectacles are fast-growing areas for TITAN: we have the stock and know-how to create huge sound walls for movie production, instant arenas for sporting events and – as we now know – robust, towering frames that Walt Disney himself would be proud of.
