Temperature-controlled infrastructure supporting material integrity at –18°C

A manufacturer of composite components for the aviation industry faced a critical capacity challenge as production volumes increased.

Carbon fiber, a key raw material used in the production of aircraft components such as fuselage sections, wings, and structural parts, requires strict temperature control during storage. To maintain its performance characteristics and structural integrity, the material must be kept consistently at –18°C.

As production scaled, the manufacturer’s existing cold storage capacity became insufficient, creating a growing risk to material quality and operational continuity.

The challenge

Carbon fiber is highly sensitive to temperature variations. If not stored under controlled conditions, the material can begin to degrade, directly impacting the quality and reliability of finished components.

The manufacturer needed to:

• Maintain consistent storage at –18°C
• Support increased production volumes
• Ensure uninterrupted access to materials close to the manufacturing process
• Avoid quality risks that could affect downstream production

Without sufficient on-site storage capacity, the company would have had to consider external storage options or infrastructure investment — both introducing additional complexity and reduced operational control.

The solution

To address the capacity gap, TITAN Containers provided a flexible temperature-controlled storage solution using ArcticStore units installed directly at the customer’s production site.

The setup included a combination of container sizes to match operational needs:
• 2 × 40ft units
• 7 × 20ft units
• 1 × 10ft unit

Positioned adjacent to the manufacturing area, the installation ensured immediate access to materials while maintaining strict temperature control.

To support consistent performance and traceability, the units were equipped with SmartArctic remote monitoring. This provided real-time visibility of temperature conditions, automated alerts in case of deviations, and continuous data logging. The system enabled both the customer and TITAN to monitor storage performance, supporting quality assurance processes and providing a documented temperature history for internal controls or audits.

The container-based approach allowed the manufacturer to scale storage capacity in line with production growth, without the need for permanent construction or disruption to existing operations.

The result

With reliable temperature-controlled storage in place, the manufacturer was able to protect the quality of its carbon fiber materials while supporting increased production volumes.
